Appointed Head of Legacies

The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity

The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity (RMCC) raises money solely to support The Royal Marsden, a world-leading cancer centre. Together with the hospital we ensure our nurses, doctors and research teams can provide the very best care and develop life-saving treatments, which are used across the UK and around the world.

This is an opportune time to join The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity as we work with the hospital to open the Oak Cancer Centre and embark on our exciting new Public Fundraising & Engagement strategy. This role presents an exciting opportunity to play a vital part in helping us to realise our ambition and shape the future of Legacies at RMCC. The new strategy will see income increase by 50% over the next 5 years.

This is a key role for the Charity, and you will bring your experience to quickly integrate yourself into the team and take responsibility for the development and implementation of a long-term strategic plan that will increase the number and value of legacies left to The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity while also managing the Legacy team.

About the role

  • Responsible for all aspects of the legacy programme, which accounts for approximately half of the income for public fundraising, which is targeted for £13 million
  • Legacy target of £6.5 million for next financial year. There is scope to work with an agency on forecasting and legacy scenario planning
  • Leading on the development and delivery of new and existing legacy products and campaigns, in addition to overseeing administration
  • Management of a team of 3, ensuring they have delegated authority on marketing and campaigns
  • Strategic ownership of the legacy budget, responsible for driving growth across the programme in line with the fundraising and engagement strategy
  • Ensuring best-in-class stewardship and cross-channel marketing, working closely with other heads in the directorate and across the organisation
  • Increasing awareness of legacy giving both externally and internally
  • Development and implementation of a long-term strategic plan that will increase the number and value of legacies left to The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity
  • Input into the charities 3-year strategy development process, ensuring legacies is positioned correctly within these plans

About you

  • An ideal role for a Senior Legacy Manager, looking for a step into a Head of Legacies position, or an established Head of Legacies looking for their next challenge and attracted by the cause and/or RMCC’s ambitious growth plans
  • Strong stakeholder management skills, with enthusiasm for working with a variety of audiences across an organisation
  • Line management experience essential, ideally of at least 2 reports, with candidates demonstrating the necessary skills to grow and develop the legacy team
  • Direct experience of managing the administration function of legacies is not essential but a strong understanding of that function is required
  • Ability to spot opportunities, ensuring the audience is the key focal point of all legacy work
