Appointed Head of Philanthropy and Partnerships

Terrence Higgins Trust

Terrence Higgins Trust (THT) was the first charity in the UK to be set up in response to the HIV epidemic, at a time when no other response or frameworks were in place to support people impacted by HIV. From small beginnings in a flat in central London, the charity has grown to become the UK’s leading HIV and sexual health charity, and one of the largest in Europe.

THT have always been at the forefront of the fight against HIV and AIDS. Since the charity was formed, the needs of people living with and affected by HIV have been fundamental to their development. In 2022, the charity launched their new strategy Together We Can, which aims to move closer to achieving zero new HIV transmissions in the UK by 2030.

As Head of Philanthropy & Partnerships you will be responsible for leading a talented team of 10 to deliver a team target of £2.27m for 2023/24 (growing to £3m in 2024/25) via Trusts, Major Donors, VIP Partnerships and Corporate fundraising. Working closely with the Director of Income Generation you will be responsible for the strategy development and implementation of these income streams, retaining personal donor relationships/partnerships where necessary and leading by example to support the team in achieving their targets.

We are looking for a creative problem solver – someone who is insightful and intuitive – spotting opportunities/recognising links across income streams and working effectively as part of senior leadership within the Income Generation directorate to maximise the potential for fundraising. THT has a strong track record of successful special events which has allowed long term major donor relationships and corporate sponsorship to develop as a consequence – while the logistics of these events sits within a separate team you will work closely together to support planning and increase income, while considering the bigger picture and long term donor journeys for these supporters. You will work closely with senior stakeholders (internal and external) with the support of organisational leadership to maximise relationships and attend meetings/events as necessary. As such, we are looking for an experienced and confident fundraising lead, with the ability to influence and secure buy-in from a range of audiences.

About the role

As Head of Philanthropy & Partnerships you will:

  • Be responsible for developing and implementing the strategy for THT’s high value income streams (Trusts, Corporates, HNWIs and VIP Partnerships), focusing on high-value, multi-year support and strategic funding opportunities that support growth targets and organisational plans
  • Lead and inspire a talented team of 10, supporting them to achieve team targets while also developing their professional skills and knowledge
  • Lead by example to foster a proactive culture focused on relationships and donor stewardship, maximising funding opportunities and working collaboratively across the organisations whilst developing a deep understanding of donor motivations
  • Operate as part of the wider THT leadership team, both in Income Generation and the organisation, to work collaboratively to create meaningful funding opportunities for new and current donors/partners

About you

Ideal skills and experience:

  • An experienced high value fundraiser, with expertise of trusts & foundations, major donor and/or corporate fundraising at a 6-figure level (expertise of working with celebrities/VIPs is desirable but not essential)
  • A strategic leader, focused on the bigger picture but with an ability to remain hands on and operational as needed
  • An individual with a proven track record of managing and developing successful teams, leading by example to achieve targets and growth across all THT’s high value income streams
  • Someone who puts stewardship and the donor experience at the heart of their work, with a focus on developing long term relationships/partnerships
  • An individual with expertise of managing senior stakeholders (trustees, committees, senior leadership etc.) with the ability to influence and establish relationships at all levels
